The Unexplained - Haunted Asheville
In downtown Asheville on busy bustling Biltmore Ave. you will find Barley's Tap Room. This is the site of Asheville's largest known mass murder. Two policemen and three private citizens were gunned down.
It was November 13, 1906 and a man by the name of Will Harris escaped from a prison road crew in Charlotte, N.C. and came to Asheville in search of his estranged girl friend who had left town as soon as he was arrested. Will arrived in Asheville and went straight to a small restaurant owned by the girls mother and began to start trouble. The mother trying not to upset her customers took him to the apartment she and her husband lived in above the restaurant. The mother kept denying that she knew the whereabouts of her daughter and Will was getting more and more violent with her. As her husband came in from work he heard through the door what was going on and got a city policeman that was outside on the street. When the policeman knocked on the door and announced himself as a law officer.
Will without any remorse shot through the door with a shotgun and killed the officer on the spot. He then came out of the restaurant and began shooting with a pistol and a shotgun killing another police officer on the street that exchanged fire with him and two more citizens. Several others on the busy street were injured in the shootout.
Will Harris headed south and a posse of 1000 men found him hiding under a bush about 5 miles out of town. He was shot more than 100 times and his body laid in state at a local funeral home on the outskirts of town for about 2 weeks. More than 2,000 people viewed the body. Legend has it that he had been so feared in life that his corpse was shot, stabbed, beaten and cut and went to his grave with over 200 bullet holes and countless stabs and cuts.
Barley's opened in this location in 1994. Customers and employee's have shared several experiences while in the building and it is rumored at least one employee quit after seeing the backroom elevator operating itself.
